pH BIOCHEMISTRY TEST

 

pH means the potential or power of hydrogen; the measure of the relative acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH scale is from 1 to 14. The middle of the scale is 7, which is neutral. The bottom of the scale, below 7 is acid. The top of the scale, above 7 is alkaline.

Typical pH ranges:

Saliva:  6.5 to 7.4

Small Intestine secretions:  7.5  to  8.0

Urine:  6.5 to 8.0

TOXIC DIETS

Today’s diets are very acidic with toxic foods. These acids build up in the body and cause irritation. Repeated irritation then causes inflammation. When these acids build up in the joints, they cause arthritis, in the skin causing dermatitis, in the colon causing colitis. These are just a few of the many diseases that acidosis is the main cause. The blood and tissues need to be operating in a slightly alkaline environment. An acidic diet will create acids that are like battery acid burning the cells and tissues creating free radical damage. The more the body becomes acidic due to poor mineral balance, we become more ripe for disease. A diet high in vegetables and fruits will alkalize and buffer these acids.

METHODS TO ALKALIZE

Eating more fruits and vegetables is the first way to alkalize. When you look down upon your plate, there should be more vegetables on it than other foods. It is a challenge to eat 8-10 vegetables and 2 fruits every day.

 

Most people will use alkalizing drinks such as a green grass or vegetable juice. Others like apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, vegetable juice, coral calcium, green tea, liquid chlorophyll, alfalfa grass, barley grass, wheat grass, spirulina, any of the algaes, and seaweeds. Choose freshly made juices or dried powders to mix with water, preferably. These plants in liquid form will enter directly into the blood and more easily alkalize the blood and tissues. Do this as the first thing into your body in the morning. You can eat 20 minutes later. Smoothies are not considered to be a green drink as they contain the fiber from fruits and vegetables. Therefore they have to be digested through the digestive tract rather than a green drink going directly into the blood stream to alkalize. A smoothie is considered a replacement to eating food, while the green drink is considered to be just a drink.

But be sure to test the pH with litmus paper to ensure that you are actually alkaline.

pH TESTS

Use litmus paper to test. pH tests are a simple way to determine if the body is staying in balance with its mineral levels. When the minerals are imbalanced, many normal chemical processes cannot occur. Minerals are required for absorbing and activating minerals, for making enzymes which are important for almost every system in the body, for keeping the bones and tissues healthy, and they keep the mind functioning properly. When the mineral balance is thrown off, it will show up in the saliva and urine. Minerals from fruits and vegetables are required to buffer the acids.

 

 

CAUSES OF AN ACIDIC BODY

  • electromagnetic radiation

  • emotional turmoil

  • excess stress

  • excess protein

  • excess grains

  • meats and fish

  • coffee, black tea and soda pop

  • junk food

  • drugs and medications

  • excessive exercise

 

 

ALKALIZING FOODS

  • Fruits

  • Vegetables

  • Green drinks

  • Almonds, flax, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower seeds

  • Millet and Sprouted grains

  • Water and Green tea

  • Apple cider vinegar

Citrus fruits are acidic and stay acid for one hour in the body, then change to alkaline ash. Some people are bothered by this acid in their stomach or bladder. Lemon or lime juice is often used to help alkalize. Only use if not allergic. Consume only once a day. But be sure to test the pH with litmus paper to ensure that you are actually alkaline.

 

 

SALIVA & MINERALS

During sleep the body tries to repair itself and detoxify. All of the toxins made and consumed during the day that the body could not handle, are stored in the fat membranes. During sleep, the body can bring them out of storage and begin using up alkaline reserves to detoxify and buffer them. If the alkaline reserves were already depleted from the day’s activities, the body will pull alkaline reserves from the salivary glands, which are not used during sleep. Upon awakening, the body will have been detoxifying for over 5 hours. If the saliva test, first thing in the morning, shows a pH of 6.1 or lower, then all of the alkaline reserves throughout the body are being heavily taxed, which makes us vulnerable to degenerative disease.

 

If a first morning saliva test is a pH of less than 5, the person may be very ill. Potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium are pulled out of the organs, tissues and bones to buffer the acids.

If the saliva pH is equal or greater than 6.5 to 7.4, you are in balance as there are some reserves left to work with to buffer toxins for the following day.

 

A saliva pH of 7.2 to 7.4 is ideal.

 

 

RESULTS OF AN ACIDIC BODY

An acidic environment in the body can cause:

  • free radical oxidation

  • poor absorption of vitamins and minerals

  • kills off friendly bacteria and weakening of immune system resulting in proliferation of microbes: bacteria, mold, fungus, parasites

  • connective weakness resulting in poor chiropractic adjustments, arthritis, gout, etc.

  • disturbed sleep patterns

  • physical and mental fatigue

  • emotional strain and anxiety

  • increased calcium loss resulting in osteoporosis

  • toxic fat build-up with weight gain

  • increased cholesterol to buffer the acids in the arteries

  • growth of cysts and tumors

TESTING YOUR pH URINE and SALIVA

 

The saliva is a reflection of the blood and tissue that should be slightly alkaline, ideally. The normal range is 6.8 to 7.4  To do the test, use litmus paper, also called nitrazine paper or pHydrion paper, and a color guide obtained from a health food store.

 

Test first thing in the morning before brushing the teeth. Bring fresh saliva up in the mouth and swallow it. Bring saliva up in mouth twice more and swallow. Then on the third saliva, put a piece of litmus paper into mouth to wet it for a few seconds. Take out of mouth and check the color on pH scale color chart. Depending on the litmus paper and chart that you have, the result should show a dark green to blue color ideally, which is pH 7.0 to 7.4, no higher than pH 8.

 

 

A pH of  6.5 to 7.0 as a dark green color, accompanied by a feeling of wellness throughout the day indicates that the body is eliminating acids and still retaining its minerals.

 

If the result is pH 6.0 to 6.5 as a medium green color, and a regular test sample, the body is under toxic stress. The mineral reserves are inefficient and could lead to disease.

 

A saliva pH below 6.0 indicates that the body is not adapting very well and the alkaline mineral reserves are depleting.

 

A pH reading of 4.5 to 5.5 is of concern. The potassium levels are dangerously low. Have a good work-up done by your physician!

 

 

URINE

A litmus paper test could be used to test first morning urine. Urine during the day should be slightly acidic. A normal urine pH changes throughout the day.

   7:00 am   between   6.5 – 7.0  pH

   3:00 pm   between   6.5 – 7.0  pH

   9:00 pm   between   7.0 – 7.5  pH

​

Urine with an ammonia smell at each testing indicates that the body chemistry is too acidic. This is a critical warning to consume more alkaline foods. Toxins are building up, the liver is not cleansing and the blood is dirty. This makes perfect conditions for the development of disease.

Another way to test is to use the Sulkowitch Test that checks calcium being excreted in the urine.

 

 

INACCURATE READINGS

Readings can be inaccurate if you drink 2 glasses of water before testing can make the urine clear and seem as if not enough calcium is being secreted. This is not a valid test. Drinking a large amount of milk before the test can increase urine calcium. Wait a couple of hours, then retest. Being emotional upset or stressed can give an inaccurate reading. Prescription medications can interfere with the results.

 

 

BE PATIENT

It takes a while for the body to balance itself after it has been out of harmony for quite sometime. Be patient. Poor readings may go on for 2-4 weeks while you are changing your diet to a more alkaline diet. Sometimes the saliva is reading good but not the urine. This might be due to adrenal stress and imbalance of sodium and potassium. It can take a few months to rebuild the adrenals. Check the adrenals with the Koenisburg Urine Test. If both saliva and urine pH tests are good and you still feel lousy, suspect an imbalance in intestinal microbes. A specific diet may be required or a detoxification program followed.
